Manong a ja Pitse Unplugged

Vultures feeding

We recently came across this magnificent sighting; being in the presence of a wake of vultures (Known as Manong in Setswana) feeding on a dead horse along the Trans-Kalahari Highway, between Kang and Ghanzi.

While a committee sat on a nearby tree, a kettle circled overhead, making sure their newly found carcass is still there, as they prepared to land for a cluster feasting.

Here’s a fun fact: Vultures remove harmful substances from the environment, protecting animal and human health. Vultures are one of the most effective scavengers. They only eat dead animal carcass. They remove bacteria and other poisons in the environment quickly, consuming carcasses before they decay.
