Revolution/Evolution – Changing the Narrative at Durban FilmMart 2022

Africa’s premier film industry event, the Durban FilmMart (DFM), will return for its 13th edition

under the theme of Revolution/Evolution – Changing the Narrative from 22 – 31 July 2022.

Still in the spirit of embracing the digital shift, this year’s hybrid event will continue online whilst an in-person 3-day industry event will be presented from 22-24 July 2022.

“DFM 2022 is taking the next step in delivering an in-depth and dynamic programme to the widest possible film community by hosting both an online and physical event,” explains Magdalene Reddy, General Manager of the Durban FilmMart Institute. “Returning part of the DFM industry programme to the physical space will give filmmakers the opportunity for tangible networking and direct engagements which we trust will light the spark for new collaborative film ideas and processes.”

The 13th DFM programme will focus on the ever-shifting evolution within the industry, the game changers working to bring inclusivity and access to all levels of filmmakers, and the new spaces driving content creation.  With African and the African Diaspora interests as the core of the industry programme, mainstream film professionals, established independents, emerging and alternative filmmakers who continue to shape new directions with their work will present masterclasses, panel discussions and hangout sessions.

The virtual DFM programme will include 40 projects in development participating in the Pitch and Finance Forum.  The 2022 programme will also include the DFM Content Shop presenting a curated digital catalogue of African projects ready for sale.

Programming elements carrying the 2022 theme will include:

DFM Conversations – a series of keynote talks with leading content producers working

in or with Africa.

Durban Does Docs – documentary film directors, organisations and initiatives presenting on the creative documentary filmmaking process.

Talent Durban Talks – directors from the continent highlighting their storytelling journeys.

Animation@DFM – engagement with the growing influence of animation on the continent.

Content Shop: New Pathways and Coproduction Corner – digital opportunities in the areas of sales, distribution, and festival strategy.

Diversity, inclusivity and access is at the heart of the Durban FilmMart Institute ethos and this is evident in the sessions on Queer Representation, Women in Film, the Economically Marginalised, Africa in the Diaspora, Global South and Global North Relationships, and South to South Partnerships.

Full programme details will be announced in due course.

Registrations are still open for both online and physical participation.
