GABORONE, Botswana, June 2020/ — Former Gabz FM presenter Petula Elkindiy has become the latest Botswana radio export to join the star-studded South African (SA) radio stations thanks to securing a gig with Johannesburg’s trailblazing YFM effective from July 1st. The petite lass will take over the 3am – 5am slot on weekdays and breakfast (6am – 10am) on Saturdays with her show, The Morning Essentials.
YFM is a youth-focused radio station, with the Y in its name meaning precisely “Youth”. It has an Urban Contemporary format, with music standing for 80% of its airtime, of which Kwaito, Hip Hop, and R&B take up the biggest share. Its music selection is at the discretion of its in-house team of DJs. The remaining line-up of YFM consists of talk shows mainly focused on entertainment with a dash of the latest news and interactive competitions.
The station is also praised for its Y Academy initiative that provides radio training to young interns every year. The station broadcasts from Johannesburg using the frequency 99.2 FM and is also available on channel 859 on DStv including online live streaming.
YFM is the same station that popular 94.7 FM afternoon drive time host, DJ Fresh born Thato Sikwane first got his radio gig in SA. Speaking to #botswanaunplugged after the confirmation of her gig, Petula could not hide her excitement as well as the positive journey ahead.
“I’m extremely excited, a little nervous as you’d expect before any major event. But overall, I’m very excited”.
Petula left Gabz FM in 2017 to further her studies at Rhodes University in SA but the radio bug never left her as she managed to get a slot in one of the many community radio stations in RSA to push and further her broadcasting passion.
“I definitely felt the void and yearned for radio while in school, which is why during the first opportunity to go back, I joined a community radio station called BayFM. Now onto YFM, the pressure is there. Might be self-inflicted though, but I feel it. Because I’m also from Botswana it’s like an expectation that I better bring that Botswana heat which I will,” said Petula.
Other Batswana radio personalities that have shone in SA include O’Neal (Cliff Central and Touch Central) and DJ Fresh at YFM, 5FM, Metro FM and 947)
