Local musician’s dreams come true this festive season with DStv

GABORONE, Botswana, November 2019 – It’s just about time for Happier Holidays with DStv and in the spirit of what festive season represents for the average Motswana: happiness, togetherness and going back to one’s roots, MultiChoice Botswana recently announced that local musical dynamo, Han-C, will make his first debut in a television commercial for DStv’s 2019 festive campaign.

“At MultiChoice Botswana we are committed to finding new ways in which our content and the platform on which it is broadcast can enrich lives,” says MultiChoice Botswana Managing Director, Katlego Arnone. “This relates directly to the viewer through the vast amount of entertainment and world-class sport we have on offer on DStv but also through the opportunities we make available to those who keep our local creative industry alive” she continued.

A product of a musical family, Han-C has always known that being an entertainer would be a part of his future. However, a lack of confidence on stage when it came to singing in front of others, initially sent Han-C on his musical career through dance. His first introduction to the stage was on the widely-viewed national talent show, My African Dream, which aired on Botswana Television, in the early 2000s.

After deciding to take interest in other forms of creativity outside of choreography, Han-C, born Hanceford Magapatona, realized that breaking into the music scene as a singer in Botswana would not be as easy as he assumed. “When my career began, people didn’t have faith in my longevity in the local music scene,” Han-C mentions. “People believed that I was a one-hit wonder, and that I would flop after my hit ‘Sedilaka.’ But under the management and mentorship of Sydney “Boogie Sid” Nzala, I was blessed to have someone who continuously encouraged me to dream big and to dream beyond borders. It’s actually because of Boogie Sid, that this opportunity to work with the huge brand that is DStv even happened and it was his belief in me that helped me overcome any doubts I had in myself to do it!”

Han-C’s experience in being part of the “Happier Holidays with DStv” television commercial allowed him to collaborate with regional producers and directors with years of experience in the creative industry. It also introduced him to working with international talent and musicians from other African nations who left a significant impact on the young man who took his first international trip to shoot this advert.

“At first, I was intimidated by being in the company of other big name artists, and on-air talents such as the likes of Vuyo Ngcukana from The Queen,” Han-C commented. “Then something in me told me to make the most of this opportunity as it was a once-in-a-lifetime one. I chose to work hard, focus and learn whatever I could from the experts and by the time I left the set, my confidence was higher than it’s ever been. I cannot thank MultiChoice Botswana enough for this experience. To be the first Motswana engaged for a television commercial for DStv is a huge milestone in my journey. If I could give any local musicians any advice from my experience it would be to believe in yourself, work hard and if you have focus and a dream, anything is possible!”
