GABORONE, BOTSWANA — Barclays Bank of Botswana in partnership with Rhodes University hosted a two-day Absa Data Journalism Masterclass on the 7th and 8th of November 2019 in Gaborone, Botswana. The masterclass which was attended by 17 local business journalists from various media houses was aimed at building financial reporting capacity.
“As a bank, we value our stakeholder relations and we are always exploring impactful ways to contribute to their development. The economic landscape is always evolving and as a result, we recognise the importance of the media adapting and understanding these changes.
It is through platforms such as the Absa Data Journalism Masterclass that we are able to equip the media with innovative skills and knowledge that will empower them to tell the local as well as the African economic development story in a deeper and nuanced manner,” said Spencer Moreri Public & Media Relations Manager.
This year’s engagement which has been dubbed one of the largest gathering of journalists on a continental scale was hosted across the Absa Regional Operations. Thus, giving each market the opportunity to train more journalists as compared to the previous years.
Renowned academic and expert journalism trainer, Professor Peter Verweij, facilitated the masterclass. Dr Motilola Akinfemisoye-Adejare from the University of Botswana Media Studies Department also shared her perspective on Data journalism.
Concluded Moreri, “Barclays Bank of Botswana remains dedicated to playing a pro-active role in the development and growth of local journalism. We look forward to continuing to empower our media sector through such initiatives.”
