Ertugral endorses Dipsy for the BNSC Hall of Fame status

GABORONE, BOTSWANA — Turkish born and award-winning coach, Mushin Ertugral has praised Botswana retired footballer Dipsy Selolwane saying the former Zebras striker should be amongst local sports personalities inducted in the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) Hall of Fame.

Ertugral, 60 met Dipsy, aged 41 at the South African Absa premiership side, Ajax Cape Town where the Botswana international had an illustrious career circa late 2005.  The Turkish national first came to South Africa in 1999. He further took Ajax Cape Town to its Absa Premiership Cup glory with a 2–0 victory against league champions, Mamelodi Sundowns on May 26, 2007.

That proved to be a successful season for Ajax under Ertugral as they went on to finish fourth in the league and the only side never to suffer defeat against Sundowns in that season. The same season Dipsy was voted MTN Cup midfielder of the tournament. Ertugral has never shied away from showing his admiration to former Zebras ace midfielder even after his retirement.

Ertugral’s sentiments come hot on the heels of renowned Karateka and Jazz legend Socca Moruakgomo views after seeing Dipsy’s social media post with the caption, “BNSC Hall of Fame. NO I’m not inducted yet,” where his former coach, Ertugral said Dipsy should be inducted.

Speaking exclusively to #BotswanaUnplugged from Instabul, Turkey; Ertugral said Dipsy’s resolute dedication to football if it had been followed at a tender age he would have plied his trade in top-flight European leagues and shined.

“I would say he was one of the best strategically gifted players that I have ever worked with. In addition, a great human being and an extremely dedicated player. For a county with a small population like Botswana to have a well-gifted player like Dipsy whom I got later in his age to be successful comes the question should he had been in a proper development structure, I would say he could have played in any top flight team in the world,” said Ertugral.

Dipsy who retired in 2017 has played for teams such as Engen Santos, Jomo Cosmos, Ajax Cape Town, Tuks, Supersport (South Africa), Gaborone United (Botswana), Real Salt Lake, Chicago Fire (USA) and Vejle BK (Denmark) and also helped the national team, Zebras qualify for their maiden AFCON finals in 2012.

Meanwhile, among the criterions for the BNSC Hall of Fame include amongst others that the members of the committee will do selection of individuals who are to be inducted into the hall of fame through an election process. The people eligible for nomination must be retired athletes and sports contributors. The athletes must have distinguished themselves as competitors in or outside the country and should have retired five years before being inducted.

However, contributors must be non-athletes who had made an outstanding and extraordinary contribution to sports in Botswana. The individual must have contributed for a continuous period of ten years. The BNSC Hall of Fame was launched in 2014.
