SELIBE PHIKWE, BOTSWANA — The much anticipated Miss Botswana 2019 crowning is expected this weekend (September 21st) at The Factory in Selibe Phikwe. City slickers, fashion enthusiasts from both Gaborone, Selibe-Phikwe and surrounding areas are expected to throng the former mining town where they will witness the crowning of the 53rd Miss Botswana queen.
The Miss Botswana 2019/2020 Top 12 finalists have been in Selibe-Phikwe beginning of this week for a boot camp. The boot camp encompasses a series of activities and tour of the SPEDU region. The finalists visited places such as Motlhabaneng Basketry, Platjan Bridge, Tuli Block Farms, Old Palapye, Manaledi, Selibe-Phikwe Dry Port, Nickel Park and Letsibogo Dam.
“As Miss Botswana, we have identified tourism as one of the pillars that drives the pageant. The SPEDU region is characterized by a rich tourism front that needs to be explored further hence why we will host the grand finale here. The region is loaded with economic opportunities from hospitality, recreation, horticulture and agriculture,” said the organisers this week.
Miss Botswana has partnered with SPEDU whose population is around 193, 433 according to the 2011 census. Furthermore, the region is made up of five constituencies which are Selibe Phikwe East, Selibe Phikwe West, Bobonong, Mmadinare and Lerala-Maunatlala.
The SPEDU mandate includes among others carrying out business as a regional economic diversification agency that facilitates sustainable economic growth through diversification and creation of sustainable employment opportunities for the region.
One of SPEDU’s long term transformation strategy is centered on the fact that the region has great potential for tourism and tourism related activities such as dam tourism, wildlife, historical sites and hospitality industry just to name a few.
The revitalization projects include production intensification around Motloutse, floriculture production, Thune irrigation scheme, small dams project, development of shopping mall, Phikwe softball extravaganza and SPEDU cultural festival.
The 12 Miss Botswana finalists, in no particular order are Joy Kopanang, Truth Pule, Oweditse Phirinyane, Britney Maje, Wendy Maduma, Maatla Diphuthi, Olerato Rantuana, Uua Murangi, Winfred Motcher, Oratile Baleti, Orefile Mokhojwa and Michelle Letsoalo
