Madi Majwana on nationwide tour

Madi Majwana Season 5, powered by Barclays Bank Botswana is upon us and kicked off with a 12-day tour around Botswana, which started with an activation on Monday, 22nd July 2019 at Maitisong, Maru-a-Pula School.

The crew left yesterday Tuesday, 23rd July 2019 and is expected to return on Wednesday, 3rd August 2019. The Madi Majwana stage play will be presented inside and outside Barclays Branches, Malls and various communities all over the country.

Madi Majwana is a financial literacy project produced by Maitisong in partnership with Barclays.

“Our goal is to evoke dialogue and educate people about money matters, using creativity and story-telling,” read a media communique this week.

Six years ago the Company at Maitisong in partnership with Barclays Bank Botswana conceptualized and began a Financial Literacy project for the Youth and Adults, in response to the many money related problems that Batswana had been facing, during a difficultly financial climate. The project used Applied Drama in its various forms to creatively interrogate issues facing Batswana around money.

Through this Dramatic method of interrogating issues, the project was able to unearth a deeper understanding of the problem. Thus evoking dialogue and awareness around the issues, in order to ultimately find and identify tangible solutions. Initially the project began by just using theatre. However, the project has grown to include Radio Drama, Public Debates, a Documentary and a Financial Literacy Festival.

We are excited by the level of support that we continue to receive from our partner. Our sincerest gratitude goes to Barclays Bank of Botswana.

Barclays has funded, to date close to 5 Million Pula towards Madi Majwana. Over 300 local artists have been employed through Madi Majwana, which reaches over 400 000 Batswana through Radio, Stage Tour, Workshops and Social media every year. Madi Majwana has over 4000 direct engagements with participants in various communities across the country, raising awareness and giving education around Financial Literacy. Last year the tour covered over 8000kms across Botswana and visited 19 villages and towns, with over 30 performance interventions using the Madi Majwana Stage Play.

The tour will be taking place in the following places: Hukuntsi, Kang, Ghanzi, Gumare, Shakawe, Maun, Kasane, Nata, Francistown, Bobonong, Selebi Phikwe, Palapye and Mahalapye
