GABORONE, BOTSWANA — Major Moves Comedy – a local humour movement says its biggest event of 2019 dubbed the Heavyweights International Comedy Festival (HICOFEST) will take place at Masa Square Hotel on Friday 3rd May 2019.
“Major Moves Comedy is back with their flagship event where they will go all out to showcase the different comedy styles. The Heavyweights International Comedy Festival (HICOFEST), which is now in its seventh consecutive year running, continues the tradition of showcasing comics from different countries who will share the stage with local heavyweights. The stellar lineup includes heavyweights from South Sudan, Uganda, Lesotho, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe will perform at Masa Square Hotel on Fri 3rd May,” said the organisers in a statement.
The organisers say the event aims to showcase the best local talent alongside their international counterparts in a relaxed and buoyant environment. The rib cracking lineup features AK Dans from South Sudan, Don Andre (Uganda), Skaftin (Lesotho), Slick (Namibia), Long John (Zimbabwe), Bush (Zambia), Clive Chigubu (Zimbabwe) and Botswana’s heavyweights Brooks, KLo, Thapelo Malani and Roy.
“HICOFEST will also bring upcoming comedians to the forefront as new comedians will be introduced and given a chance to share stage with the heavyweight acts,” said Major Moves Comedy’s Gaolathe Kediemetse. Ak Dans is a South Sudanese standup comedian born in Kakuma refugee camp. He uses his life experiences to thrill his audience with laughter.
Ak Dans has performed at Kigali International Comedy Festival (Rwanda), Laugh Festival 2 (Kenya), Kampala Comedy Festival (Uganda) and completed a comedy tour in South Africa where he performed in 12 shows in 11 days consecutively. On the local front, Brooks hails from Tsabong and is a two-time President’s Day Comedy Competition Champion while Zimbabwean Long John is the Winner of the 2019 National Arts Merit Award (NAMA) as an Outstanding Comedian. Slick is the co-founder of the Free Your Mind stand-up comedy movement which hosted KLo last year and is a central figure in Namibian comedy.
Thapelo Malani and Roy are heavyweights in their own right and have wowed audiences in South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Lesotho heavyweight Skaftin hosts Gags and Music Wednesdays which will be welcoming Batswana comedians in Maseru sometime in the year.
“We are excited to be hosting this event for the 7th consecutive time. Although we struggle with sponsorship for our events, we are grateful for Masa Square Hotel and Yarona FM for their input in helping us develop this art form. We want to develop and contribute positively to lives of the comedians so that they can be able to make a living off comedy like elsewhere in the world.
HICOFEST offers such a platform for local comedians as in most cases they collaborate with invited comics who in turn invite them to their countries,” said events coordinator for Major Moves Comedy Gaolathe Kediemetse.
The venue sponsor is Masa Square Hotel and tickets for HICOFEST are available at Webtickets & Spar outlets priced from P250 single and P400 double. The shows start at 8pm.
