Wizkid and Burna Boy slated for Gaborone city
Come December 2nd, all roads will lead to the National Stadium in Gaborone, when a local promotions company dubbed ‘Diamond City Concerts’ pulls out all the stops to host a festival featuring Nigeria’s Wizkid and Burna Boy. Diamond City Concerts say they are on a mission to make Gaborone a true diamond hub as they intend from time to time, to bring the most sought after events and artists to the city.
The 27-year-old and multiple award-winning, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, better known by his stage name Wizkid, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter while 26-year-old Damini Ogulu, better known by his stage name Burna Boy, is also a Nigerian Reggae-Dancehall singer and songwriter.
The “Yawa Dey” hitmaker, Burna Boy released a single titled “Like To Party” which saw him rise to prominence while his compatriot, Wizkid who started recording music at age 11 achieved international recognition following his collaboration with Drake on the global hit, “One Dance” and “Come Closer”.
The whiz kid event organizer, Bruce Nkgakile said through their larger-than-life shows they want Gaborone not to envy other cities but to have its very own profound event highlighting the capital city, Gaborone.
“Diamond City Concerts is a legally registered concept that was developed in line with the vision of Gaborone, as we envision to host big concerts in Gaborone, which is known as the diamond hub or city. We met with the mayor, His Worship Kagiso Calvin Thutlwe who has truly been supportive of all youth projects especially those that brand and amplify our city. Gaborone City Council (GCC) is the host of this concert and our vision is in line with theirs of stimulating economic growth in Gaborone and also promoting urban tourism in the city,” said Nkgakile.
Clearly no novice to the showbiz business, Nkgakile said all international artists have been fully paid adding that some have even taken to their social media platforms to announce their impending visit to Botswana.
While remaining cagey about how much they have paid international acts terming all contracts as confidential, it is no secret that Wizkid comes with a hefty price tag. He was ranked 5th on Forbes and Channel O’s 2013 list of the Top 10 Richest/Bankable African Artists. In February 2014, Wizkid became the first ever Nigerian musician to have over 1 million followers on Twitter, as well as becoming the first Afrobeats artist to appear in the 2018 Guinness World Records for his contribution to Drake’s hit song, “One Dance”.
“For us, it is not how much we have paid certain individuals, but rather a business proposition we’ve had with everyone. Their payments are confidential; the good thing is we have a mutual agreement with every artist in the line-up,” he added.
Other artists in the Diamond City Concerts line-up include RSA’s Freshly Ground, Sjava, Ringo Madlingozi, and Strictly House Bound while local acts include SCAR, Vee Mampeezy, Team Distant, Brando, Han-C, BK Proctor, Mlesho, Luzkat & Drak, DJ Sly, Cupid, Crispin the Drummer, NT Base and T.H.A.B.O.
Quizzed why an event whose mandate is to brand the city is headlined by international acts, Nkgakile said it is purely inspirational and commercial.
“Gaborone is not for Batswana or Botswana only. It is for the world to know and appreciate. We have to make this city visible so that we claim our deserved spot in the global map. For our local acts to share the same stage with these monumental and internationally acclaimed artists is a plus for them and the country. It has the ability and potential to open collaboration avenues for them and as thus elevate their stardom too.”
“We are already doing some activations in the popular Gaborone malls to sell our brand and the entire city. We are currently selling tickets in advance to avoid any mishap situations. Our security will be top notch. We have engaged with all relevant authorities to help us with any expertise needed. We have also engaged Gilbert Promotions Company to help us execute this show, their showbiz know-how is immense.”
Nkgakile noted that tickets are currently being sold on different categories at Webtickets and selected Liqouramas. The bronze category costs P200, silver P300, and gold P450 while VVIP is priced at a whopping P2500.
