Poetry comes alive with Mmakgosi Live

“Poetry is who I am. For the past 18 years I’ve lived art, and every challenge pushed me to keep pushing. After overcoming bipolar and depression, the burden to inspire people lay on me and I have seen the impact this art has had on Batswana,” revealed Mmakgosi Ophadile Anita Tau about her upcoming poetry night and dinner slated for Travel Lodge on September 8.

Tau said this year’s month of September will mark a creative explosion of social development, mental health advocacy and personal development through Poetry, Song and Fashion.“The stories are real, raw and rare. My testimony – I give to you as a gift, for healing and inspiration.”

Tau, a renowned Botswana poet said the 8th of September will see her bringing together an all-star performance of her dexterity billed for Friday, September 8th, at Travel Lodge in Gaborone from 1800hrs styled ‘Mmakgosi Live’.

“It is an event coined to sensitize people on mental health issues, raising awareness and bringing forth an element of healing through poetry and song. It is an enlightening event that purposes to inspire the audience and leave an unforgettable impact in their lives.”

According to Tau, after 18 years of writing, she envisions an outpour of empowerment, edutainment and fulfilment for everyone who will find time to attend this event. The theme of the night is “Rooted in Africa,” which entails Spoken Word Poetry, Song and a Traditional Setswana buffet to bring the theme a little closer to home.

“To make it more interactive, the audience is set to honour the theme and come dressed in their German Print or preferred African attire. The gist of the night is to share the true life experiences of Mmakgosi, her inspirational testimony of overcoming Bipolar and Depression, her healing journey, Faith, Hope and Love through storytelling and Poetry. The show features the likes of Poetess Phopho (Nametso Dorothy Phonchi), SekeiGirls and Tshegofatso Kwadiba.”

She noted that Mmakgosi Live, is an opportunity for all the arts enthusiasts and organizations to pledge their support to an empowering form of Art that inspires social and personal development.

“Art evokes change, thus 40% of the proceeds from the event will be awarded to three community development projects that I personally have been actively involved with over the years.”

She said among the chosen beneficiaries include a family of 17, who live together in Ramaphatle in a two-roomed house, while the other is a soup kitchen for the less privileged in Tsolamosese that takes place every Thursday without fail.

Furthermore, the Mmakgosi Live event seeks to empower the Sekei Girls, a skills development mentorship program she co-founded with Poetess Phopho which is designed to give young boys and girls a powerful start to flourish in the creative writing and performing industry.

“Poetry always starts dialogue on issues outside of Art. It influences and inspires. The event will also serve as a networking outlet and team building prospect for any organization that desires to inspire its employees whilst aligning their Corporate Social Investment (CSI) with Artistic growth and Social Development.”
