When Vee Mampeezy packed his bags and left for South Africa to join forces with some of the neighbouring country’s prime and seasoned artists sometime last year, a few critics here at home thought the pintsized musician had lost his marbles. However, the decision by Vee to invade RSA and do a few collabos there continues to bear fruit for Botswana’s most successful artist.
#BotswanaUnplugged can confidently reveal that the high-riding Botswana artist is also on the verge of featuring in this year’s popular #FactDurbanRocks music festival organized by DJ Tira of Afrotainment. Tira recently told @unpluggedbw that talks between them and Mampeezy are already at an advanced stages.
This year, the #FactDurbanRocks music festival, slated for Saturday (July 1st )is nothing short of SA’s best in Hip Hop, House and Kwaito and these include Cassper Nyovest; AKA; Gemini Major & Da Les; DJ Tira; Riky Rick; Duncan; Okmalumkoolkat; Sphe & Naves; Black Motion; Babes Wodumo; Big Nuz; Jaziel Brothers; Naak Musiq; Kwesta; Lvovo; Sox; Culoe De Song; Distruction Boys; Shimza; DJ Cleo; Junior De Rocka, DJ Fisherman; Cndo; Dream Team; DJ Gukwa and Prince Kaybee among others.
“We have believed for a long time that SA talent would become as good, or even better at drawing crowds to events, as international artists have in the past. Last year July, we proved it with FACT July selling out even with international artist competition on our doorstep. We can’t take the credit for this because it is our #FactFans that vote with their money and they keep voting more and more every year.”
#BotswanaUnplugged caught up with the brainchild of the music extravaganza, DJ Tira ahead of hosting his fans in his home town, Durban, South Africa this coming weekend…
Good to hear from you DJ Tira. We see a lot of upcoming artists failing to stay relevant for at least 10 years. What keeps the Afrotainment fire burning?
My drive to continue pushing the Afrotainment and Fact Durban Rocks brands internationally. This is the drive that will forever transform our stable to be relevant as always. If those artists can follow and have the ambition to be international then I don’t see them struggling with relevance.
Fair enough, this year’s show is expected to bring artists with different egos, some are even rivals in their regard, and how do you manage such varied temperaments?
(Sigh) When we work, we do so knowing there is a common goal. To do the best for the fans that come out and support us, when it comes down to it, all that matters is understanding we are doing it for the fans.
Music has sustained your career thus far, how do you keep it fresh to avoid falling into complacency?
I try and collaborate with different artists across different genres and being open to their specific contributions, epic music is made this way.
Botswana music has grown tremendously in recent years and I am sure you not stranger to such news. You have been to Botswana and we bet you’ve worked with artists such as Vee Mampeezy, the SAMA 2017 nominee and Metro Award winner…
Yes of course. We have collaborated with Vee. There is a song featuring DJ Tira and NaakMusiq. We are actually in contact with him (Vee) to be part of Fact Durban Rocks as a surprise act. There are more collaborations in the pipeline, time and scheduling is the only thing delaying us getting into the studio and creating more magic, all I can say for now is watch this space!
Are you looking at doing tours around the continent with the same lineup in an effort to extend your brand offering?
Off course! We have so much cooking right now as soon as I am ready to share with the world I will have another interview with you (laughs).
It being not the first time to host this magnificent event, how has other players contributed towards helping you brand Durban through music?
Durban Tourism understands the importance of Fact Durban Rocks and the Afrotainment Marquee, what it does for Durban’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). We have seen how we have brought the much-needed capital into Durban and how this, in turn, has assisted businesses in Durban. With Durban Tourism onboard, we are growing from strength to strength.
Interesting, what other plans is the stable working on for the future?
There is our charity organization called Fact Foundation that will be doing so much in our community, the Fact brand has so much coming up, as I said before watch this space!
