Major Moves Comedy started their events at Khwest, and then hosted them at Cresta President Hotel and later moved to AVANI Gaborone and GICC as more and more people patronized the comedy nights.

Rich Lyons began his stand up career in 1997 and has since performed throughout Europe and in his native New York and USA.

The trusted comedy merchants produced a wide variety of comedy shows such as the annual All Star National Comedy Tour, Home Coming Comedy in Mahalapye, and the annual Francistown Comedy and Poetry Night.

They have taken several top local comedians to perform in South Africa at top class events and are always giving upcoming comedians a chance to perform with established acts. It is at the annual Heavyweight International Comedy Festival (HICOFEST) which is now in its fifth edition where they go all out to showcase different comedians who present different comedy styles.

The Bulawayo-born and bred actor-cum-comedian has been nominated more than once for a National Arts Merit Award. It is his catchphrase “Ye Ye-e”, which has become his trademark and a hit with audiences.

As a sign of continual growth, Major Moves Comedy has roped in a stellar line-up of heavyweights from United States of America (USA), Finland, Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe who will be performing over two days at AVANI Gaborone. The event also aims to showcase the best of the best in local talent and alongside their International counterparts in a relaxed and buoyant environment on the 4th and 5th of May.

The rib cracking line-up features Rich Lyons (USA), Fredi Lilius (Finland), Bonez Masapo (Lesotho), Vuyo Jiya (South Africa), Mdura (Swaziland), Clive Chigubu (Zimbabwe), and Botswana heavyweights Phenyo The Master, Rekunde and Mawee.

Rich Lyons began his stand up career in 1997 and has since performed throughout Europe and in his native New York and USA. In 2009 he was a runner up at the London Bridge New Comedy Fringe Festival and has since become an occasional headliner on the UK comedy circuit. His comedy spans a wide range of topics and, when the mood hits, he may drag out the keyboard to perform a few comedy tunes as well. Rich will be performing for the first time in Botswana at HICOFEST.

Rekunde will also dish out her witty jokes.

Making a comeback to the HICOFEST stage by popular demand is Zimbabwean Clive Chigubu. Clive was a hit at the 4th Annual HICOFEST and comedy patrons specially requested that he should be brought back. A raw gem from the City of Kings and Queens, he is one of the stand-up comedians that always stands out wherever he performs. The Bulawayo-born and bred actor-cum-comedian has been nominated more than once for a National Arts Merit Award. It is his catchphrase “Ye Ye-e”, which has become his trademark and a hit with audiences.

The 5th HICOFEST will also feature Botswana’s most funny and acclaimed stand-up comedians Boniface ‘Roy’ Phetolo from Xanagas, Onalenna ‘Zozo’ Mosweu from Dikhukhung and Katlo ‘K-Lo’ Lekgowe from Kopong.

Phenyo The Master

Always known for bringing up and coming comedians to the forefront of Botswana comedy, each event we see new comedians introduced and given chance to share stage with top acts. For the 5th HICOFEST, Kose Joshua ‘Onza’ Kenosi from Sebina will be given a chance to showcase his clean, high energy, fun and clever comedy alongside the heavyweights.

“We are excited to be hosting overseas comedians for the first time and having the festival held over two days. Our main aim really is to see stand-up comedy growing in Botswana as part of mainstream entertainment. We also want to contribute positively to lives of the comedians who can be able to make a living off comedy like elsewhere in the world. HICOFEST offers such a platform for local comedians as in most cases they collaborate with invited comics who invite them to their countries,” said events coordinator for Major Moves Comedy, Gaolathe Kediemetse.

Mawee who clearly needs no introduction to his legion of comedy fans.

The venue sponsor is AVANI Gaborone Resort and Casino and tickets for HICOFEST are available at Webtickets & Spar outlets priced from P300 single and P500 double. The shows start at 8pm.
