Last night was insane. No, wait – it was truly a festival of epic proportions. This was none other than the Gaborone International Music and Culture Week closing festivity featuring the best of both Botswana and South African musicians and DJs; among them Nkosinathi Maphumolo otherwise known as Black Coffee – a multi-award winning record producer and DJ.
This show was in present-day speak, lit. Let’s just say, a balmy Saturday during Gaborone’s #GIMCXperience finale was matched by the hot fire on stage offered up by the likes of DJ Fresh, Riky Rick (Rikhado Makhado) and Afro-soul singer, Donald.
Having arrived at the venue around 1730hrs, the atmosphere at the National Stadium was mellow with a few people already gathered and raring to party down a storm.
The numbers blossomed within a few hours and already the stadia was teeming with a plethora of bouncy fun lovers from all walks of life; the hoi polloi, middle-class to the affluent. The ticket price also differed.
You had P150 tickets who watched the show from miles away (hic), followed by the P250 golden circle ticket holders who were closer to the stage than anyone else; while the pompous VIP and VVIPs; some of whom had paid a whooping P2, 000 so they feel important sat several metres away – as they imbibed expensive champagnes and whiskeys blended with tasty finger snacks and appetizers.
Other VVIPs including ourselves were guests of companies such as Multichoice-Botswana (DStv) who had set up a classy and posh VIP marquee and treated all the invited guests like royalty. This was the ultimate Botswana show and we can only big up the guys at Leapfrog Communication and Advertising Agency especially the captain of the ship, Thapelo ‘Fish’ Pabalinga for a job well done!
Being the 3rd instalment of the annual festivity, this year’s GIMCXperience was proof that Batswana can truly come out to party. They all came. Numbers never lie. Watching from atop the stage, the animated crowd was immense.
It was a show of epic proportions. A typical #FillUpTheStadium for lack of a better word! Madness may have been top of the bill but only a few performances stole the show.
Acts such as Mapetla and T.H.A.B.O (Sanketsa hitmakers), Dramaboi, Vee, Riky Rick, Black Coffee, DJ Fresh, Chabo, Donald and Skizo were incredible. Fans bounced along to all the meticulously crafted recitals hanging onto every word of the charismatic and ever-so-slightly lascivious South African Afro-soul singer, Donald Moatshe, commonly known by the mononym Donald.
The Rustenburg native had all the ladies eating out of his brimming musical palm, prancing and jiving his way through the GIMCXperience stage.
Riky Rick entertained the crowd with swift and sweaty lesson on rap music. He knows only one setting, and that’s banger after banger. His fans went vividly wild as they excitedly threatened to bring down the stage barricade.
Hours before, there was the insanely talented Dramaboi who also thrilled the copious masses with his artistic prowess.
The energetically-charged Vee as always was also exceptional on stage. This man truly knows how to work the crowd thanks to his dancers among them Coming Soon. The deep gravel voiced artist recently recorded an epic song dubbed “Sele” featuring DJ Maphorisa and DJ Buckz (Uhuru).
Skizo performed alongside a live band and the drums were too loud and attention-grabbing to the copious GIMCXperience audience. This was a brave move by one of Botswana’s music pioneers as the already inebriated crowd screamed and bopped along.
Black Coffee is truly adored by many. As a one-man band, there’s no doubt that this man is absolutely talented. Throughout his entire GIMCXperience set, the crowd danced and screamed, while others sang along to the popular songs he played predominantly from his latest album, Pieces of Me!
The stadium roared when he dropped his popular song, “We Dance Again”. Everybody took to the dance floor and let loose.
It was truly a great night and everybody that mattered was there, with some dressed to the nines and looking prim and proper in their bespoke outfits.
The GIMCXperience hosts were Leungo Andre Pitse, Perfectly Peelo and Rea; whose vocal deliveries were truly exceptional and well harmonized with the massive GIMCXperience audience . If you were not at the National Stadium on Saturday September 3, 2016; we feel sorry for you. Well done team Leapfrog.
