Tonight, (Wednesday, 29th May 2019), the Stanbic Bank Piazza located at Molapo Crossing Mall in Gaborone will come alive courtesy of the Coca Cola Legends in Concert featuring Malaika, Arthur Mafokate and a host of seasoned local acts.
The show, which is proudly organized by Lecco Entertainment is scheduled to start from 7pm until 2am and feature Mapetla, Chommie, DJ Sly, DJ Ngwazi and DJ Hapex Guru plus other local acts.
Yesterday, at Cresta Lodge in Gaborone, where the organizers hosted a media briefing ahead of the most anticipated show in the Botswana social calendar, visiting South African Afro pop legendary group Malaika, led by its manager Thabiso Tsotetsi alias Tasman applauded local promoter, Lecco Kenosi for taking an initiative to donate a certain percentage of the show’s proceeds to charity.
Addressing the media on Tuesday afternoon, Tasman said in many occasions promoters are always looking to maximize their profit by selfishly looking after their wellbeing only whilst ignoring the plight of the less privileged members of society.
He said to see a noble promoter such as Lecco who has taken it upon himself to organize festivals which are charity focused should be utterly praiseworthy.
“When we started the Hip hop/ Motswako movement alongside the likes of HHP and Khuli Chana, Botswana has always been our biggest supporter hence why being here today is no surprise as we too would like to give back to our long-standing fans. Music promoters in most cases are all about themselves, however charity begins at home and we all need to charitable in one way or the other. So, thank Lecco you for having us today, and I can truly promise Gaborone a supercharged Malaika performance,” added Tasman.
The multi award winning Malaika who have subtly gone quite in the music scene make a return to their popular Botswana fan base where they are expected to serenade the masses with formative hits such as ‘Destiny’ and ‘Sebakanyana’ among others.
The group also cautioned its Botswana counterparts to become their own brand ambassadors and hype their own genres so as to increase their visibility so they continue to become relevant over time even without new records.
Bongani Nchang of Malaika also gave testimony that the local kwaito king pin, Lecco is touted for his success overtime as his relevance and consistency are amongst his key factors as a professional artist.
“Artists need to be visible. Observing by statistics that are there for everyone without being technical, Universal Studios signed Vee, and this is a true testimony to his hard work and visibility. He has done it and this got to show you that it’s possible to penetrate markets locally and even across borders. Music is a universal language so I urge fellow musicians to think beyond the Botswana market and borders.”
Quizzed as to what their fans can expect at the festival tonight, Bongani said their job is to respect every event anywhere around the world where they are booked to perform and tonight will be nothing short of professionalism, energy and many surprises.
Meanwhile, the petite Chommie of 999 Records who was speaking on behalf of Arthur Mafokate who could not be on time for the press update due to flight delays said she is extremely excited to be performing alongside legends from her country, and promised Batswana nothing but fireworks.
“The support from Batswana has been amazing over the years. They have made us proud. It’s platforms such as the legends concert where we share ideas to collaborate. It’s also a great honor to be here in Gaborone. It’s been a while since we have had a big show here in Botswana. I am one person who enjoys the stage. To be amongst legends such as Malaika is a cherry on top for me,” added Chommie.
For his part, the organizer, Kenosi said to have these legends under one roof was made possible by all his sponsors who listened to his pleas since the show donates to charity and for that he remains thankful for their generous gestures.
The Legends In Concert festival is proudly sponsored by Coca Cola, Duma FM, Stanbic Bank Piazza and Cresta Hotels. The show starts at 7pm sharp.
