Botswana hosts 8th edition of the Region 5 Youth Games

Monday,10th December 2018, GABORONE. – The 8th Edition of the Region 5 Youth Games are underway in Gaborone with a total of 11 countries taking part.

At the end of the 4th day of the competition (Sunday 9thDecember 2018), a total of 86 medals had been awarded to the winning athletes.

 South Africa leads with a total of 30 medals composed of 14 gold, silver (14) and 2 bronze.

 Angola comes next with 22medals made of 10 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze, Zambia is third with  8 medals composed of 2 gold ,2 silver and 4bronze.

Malawi is 4th with one gold medal. The hosting nation Botswana is on the 5th spot with 13 medals made of 5 silver and 8 bronze.

 Namibia has 2 medals in 1 silver and a bronze. Zimbabwe and Mozambique complete the list of the countries that has obtained medals with 7 and 3 bronze medals respectively.

The kingdom of Eswatini and Lesotho are the only countries who are still to register medals.  Tanzania is yet to record any medal as they brought only the boys football team whose finals will be played on Sunday 16 December 2018.

Team events

In the team events for Judo Angola scooped gold with Zambia taking the silver Botswana got a bronze.

In the Basketball 3 x 3 ladies tournament played on Saturday the 8thDecember 2018, Angola continued with their dominance winning the gold medal while South Africa and Botswana won Silver and Bronze respectively.

Some of the games were stopped on Saturday afternoon due to heavy rains and the affected games were played on Sunday.

Despite the teething problems in the beginning, the games are well underway and all is in order.

Health Update

The Games Health, Medical and Anti-Doping Committee is on high alert regarding athletes and officials’ health. There is a high alert and constant vigilance to ensure safe and secure Games for the teams and their delegations.  A few isolated incidences of illnesses and injuries have been recorded and these have been contained and surveillance is ongoing.  The situation is being monitored closely with the view to save lives, limb and improve athletes, officials and spectators’ lifestyle.  All delegates and athletes continue to be encouraged to practise personal hygiene to improve health and wellbeing during the entire Games period.
