We sauntered into the venue like royalty just after lunch to find the place already teeming with a plethora of immaculately dressed and inspired wine lovers. As avid subscribers to anything prim and proper ourselves, there was no way we would have missed an opportunity to be part of the sundry Batswana and citizens who flocked the popular Wine Uncorked Session hosted by Lengau Wine Company in association with Avani Gaborone Resort & Casino this past Saturday.
Though it was sweltering hot, the setting was just perfect for anyone who fancied an alluring and relaxing atmosphere over a glass of wine; be it red or white, bubbly punctuated by soothing music from various artists who took to the intimidating stage.
Wine tastings tend to be pretty standard and can be perceived as stuffy or for older people. But what if there was a concept to take the expected stuffiness out of a wine tasting and make it fun?
The past Saturday afternoon saw just that with the Wine Uncorked Session event at Avani Gaborone Resort & Casino, an apt event which promises to be a new concept of wine pairing where the focus is not so much on matching a great wine with great food, but more so matching great wines with great experiences.
And yes, I would say event organisers, Lengau Wine Company and DGB succeeded.
Upon arrival, guests were greeted with a glass of their preferred wine, and everybody was encouraged to mingle until the event officially kicked off with inspired musical renditions from the likes of Botswana’s Women of Jazz, a trio made up of songstresses Punah Gabasiane-Molale, Nnunu Ramogotsi and Kearoma Rantao as well as the International Band Flying Bantu from Zimbabwe.
Quite stirring through was the day’s theme, largely inspired by South Africa’s Sophiatown fashion sense (or Kofifi, a suburb of Johannesburg – a legendary Black cultural hub that was destroyed under Apartheid, rebuilt under the name of Triomf, which in 2006 officially returned to its original name).
Those who had observed the Wine Uncorked Session theme by the book all came looking utterly alluring in vintage, modern, sophisticated and funky wardrobes, some having searched through their mothers’, uncles’ and dads’ closets for a spick-and-span Sophiatown look.
The beautiful and well thought out fashions shone brightly throughout the entire afternoon into the evening with a few scooping prizes for best dressed, which included a night in the AVANI Gaborone Resort &Casino, Spa voucher from Mosha Beauty and Slimming Spa and Bubbly from Lengau Wine Company.
Quite amazing about this particular event was the mere fact that entry into the Wine Uncorked Session cost only P200, which afforded one a branded Event Tasting Glass, 20 Tasting Coupons to sample at all the 12 Stalls, as well as enjoy great music from The Women of Jazz and the International Band Flying Bantu.
How big-hearted can one get! This was truly an event a half, and everybody was fully immersed in the organizers’ benevolence.
The full wine tasting experience afforded both adherents and rookies of ‘fermented grapes’ alike a full palate of the crisp, dry, fruity, oaky, tannic or bouquet of the miscellaneous wines on offer.
The Wine Uncorked Session is a “must-visit” event for all wine lovers, as it represents a chance to taste, discuss and buy the wines of various wines from Lengau Wine Company.
A cardinal rule when stocking up your cellar is “try before you buy”.
The local based Lengau Wine Company brought under one roof all their various wine and gin brands such as Douglas Green Sunkissed Natural Sweet Rose, Fever Tree, Brampton, Bellingham, Bombay Sapphire, Tall Horse and Franschhoek Wine among many.
Thank you for such an amazing experience DGB, Lengau Wine Company and Avani Gaborone Resort & Casino, until next time, we raise our brimful glasses and toast to yet another epic wine tasting experience in future!
