GABORONE; – – / The annual and lucrative football cup spectacle in the Botswana Football Association (BFA) calendar powered by the leading mobile network provider, Mascom Wireless and christened ‘Mascom Top 8’ was officially launched today (Tuesday) in Gaborone. The season 8 tourney’s first quarterfinals are expected on the 23rd – 25th of November where mouth-watering clashes are expected to the merriment of avid soccer fans across the country.
This year’s season promises to be more interesting as the tourney features within it clubs that are previous champions such as Township Rollers, Jwaneng Galaxy, Orapa United and Gaborone United. When speaking to football stakeholders and the media on Tuesday morning at Gaborone’s Game City Mall Terrace, Mascom Wireless Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jose Couceiro expressed that said the Mascom Top 8 expedition is worth celebrating especially for his company as they have and continuously bring together the massive Botswana football community for a common goal, celebrating football.
“I look back at where we come from and I’m proud of the milestones so far. I’m even more excited for the future of the Mascom Top 8. This has all been possible because of the cordial relationship we have with the Botswana football family, all the Mascom Top 8 participating teams including the fans.” Furthermore, the CEO added, “As you might be aware, this year Mascom is celebrating 20 years in Botswana. This milestone cannot be celebrated without mentioning our contribution to sport in Botswana. We have over the years positioned the Mascom brand as the Number 1 supporter of sports by making significant contributions to the development of different sporting codes.”
Couceiro also expressed his delight especially that the tournament has brought with it passionate competition to the league in general as every season the Mascom Top 8 welcomes new rookies into the much-loved Top 8 competition.
“Sharps Shooting Stars and Black Forest; this for us is a continuation of the Mascom Top 8 culture of having at least two new teams every season for the past 8 seasons. This shows that Mascom Top 8 is growing, and reaches out to more clubs from every nook and cranny of the country. We have seen teams grow and become even bigger household names with some new entrants ultimately winning the Mascom Top 8 tourney,” he concluded.
For his part, BTC Premiership League CEO, Thabo ‘Stiles’ Ntshinogang expressed the same sentiments by Couceiro, highlighting that Mascom Top 8 has immensely contributed to the growth and panache of local football.
Whilst the venues of the Top 8 fixtures are yet to be announced, the first leg of the quarterfinals is expected on 23-25 November, whilst the second leg will kick-off from 7 -10 December. The first leg of the semi-finals is scheduled for 26 -27 January 2019 with the second leg scheduled on 8-9 February 2019 and the finals on 2nd March 2019.
