GABORONE; Love him or hate him, this Francistown native who largely grew up in Gaborone circa 1992 is an epitome of “good mature wine mellowing with time”. Born Henny Maruapula 32 years ago and popularly known as Henny Maps in social media circles, this gregarious Motswana will persistently tweet about a certain unknown brand until everyone takes notice – a typical digital media influencer of note.

From time to time, local companies will engage Henny to take their brands to greater heights especially in the new era of digital media marketing where every brand is trying so hard to win the hearts and minds of millennials. His relentless pursuits are slowly bearing fruits and just recently, Africa has warmed to his everyday hustle and he has been a guest in coveted interactive digital media forums such as #WeTalkBiz in July 2017 and #AfricaTweetChat just recently in October 2018.

True to his entrepreneurship journey as a digital media influencer, Henny is currently the brand ambassador of Kwese TV Botswana and Abaricom – an Internet Service Provider (ISP). In the past, Henny has also worked with Brand Botswana, Botswana Tourism, Tlatsa Lebala, Botswana Youth Awards and the Hamptons Jazz Festival to help push and position their various products and services. He’s this week’s crush…

What do you like doing in your spare time?

I enjoy watching movies via Kwese Play or just being home chilling and cooking. I love to cook and sharing my meals on social media.

Who is your celebrity crush?

Locally it is Sadi Dikgaka and Ratie Kefitlhile while internationally it’s Angelina Jolie and Beyoncé. LOL.

Are you single?

Have you been invited to my wedding yet?

How would someone get your special attention?

Just being themselves, and they would have to make me laugh, be able to have a conversation with me about anything and have an awesome sense of humor.

What has been your best or worst date?

I don’t do dates, so old school. So pre-arranged, I like spontaneous things.

Would you date a fan?

I am not aware I have fans. Ha-ha!

What would you change your name to?

For what for who? I just love my names the way they are!

What’s your biggest pet peeve something?

Perceptions that people make about other people, without wanting to know the person first.

What’s your most annoying habit?

I’m persistent, a go-getter and I never give up till I get what I want, and that annoys some people at time. Who cares though?

Do you ever get used to being a celebrity?

I wouldn’t consider myself a celebrity. I would rather say I am a social media personality and a relatively known person. However, I will take it whenever it comes.

Who is your source of inspiration?

My father, for his vision and tenacity into wanting to push the Maruapula name beyond limits and wanting it to have a long lasting legacy. His baton is firmly in my grasp.

Do you speak any language?

Setswana and English.

Where would like to visit?

Some exotic Greek or Portuguese Islands. We are greatly disadvantaged as a landlocked country.

If you were not famous. What would you be up to?

I would still be the same Henny Mohenyi Maruapula.

Who is the messiest person you know?

I don’t enter people’s private spaces and look at their mess or lack thereof.

What’s the most interesting thing you have read or seen this week?

I read that someone stole a bathtub, how absurd is that?

What would you like to be remembered about you?

I would like to be remembered as an interactive influencer, someone who pushed boundaries and made social media marketing a thing in Botswana and beyond. Someone who rose up against all odds, and always had the will power to succeed no matter how many times he failed or what boundaries he encountered along the way.

What message would you like to give to your fans?

Just be yourself, stick to your path, you will get the recognition you deserve. Never give up on what you’re passionate about.
