Letshego scoops Standard Chartered Cup 2018

Letshego’s 5-a-side soccer team over the weekend at Duma FM grounds emerged the winners of this year’s Standard Chartered Cup 2018 trophy.  Letshego came up on top after beating 11 other competing teams during a tournament hosted by Standard Chartered Bank Botswana on Saturday. The victory will see Letshego jetting out of the country sometime in November to represent Botswana in Merseyside, Liverpool in England.

However, unlike the past tournaments where the winning team had to face another regional team to decide who goes to UK, this year the winning team automatically receives a trip to the UK which entail an exclusive Liverpool Football Club (LFC) experience such as attending a Liverpool FC match at the magnificent Anfield Stadium as well as receiving a professional training session with the LFC Academy coaches.

Before clinching the coveted title and trophy, Letshego won all their matches in Pool A before booking their place in the quarter finals with Prisons who had finished 4th in Pool B. Letshego proved that their triumph will be an easy one as they played good football to reach the semi-finals and ultimately the finals where they trounced Choppies 1- 0. Letshego coach, Ryan Lekone said his team had a tremendous success, which include playing at the Football 5-aside World Cup (F5WC) in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The F5WC is the world’s largest 5-aside football tournament for amateur players. The competition was founded in 2014 and brings together 32 teams who battle it out for the honors.

“The team put a lot of hard work such as practicing every day with a proper schedule. We also play in the corporate league at Molapo Crossing Mall’s 5-a-side league. We continue to play in various tournaments in South Africa and this year also mark a third consecutive year featuring at the world cup. We will be heading to Liverpool to witness another milestone achievement of the team. Being in the presence of Liverpool legends and watching at least one game will be motivation enough before the boys head to this year’s world cup in China this November.”

Standard Chartered Bank Botswana Head of Corporate and Brand Marketing, Saone Balopi said they have been running the tournament for the past three years and has been successful thanks to their partnership with Botswana Football Association (BFA) for requisition of referees and professionalism.

“This is the 3rd year that Standard Chartered Bank Botswana has hosted this tournament. Unlike other years, this year the participating teams were bank clients only. In total there were 12 teams divided into two pools of six teams playing a round robin format. The top four teams in each pool (based on points) advanced to the quarterfinals, which were a knock out format that eventually led to the semi-finals and the finals. There were no queries on the format and no queries on the overall tournament. We ensured that we have experienced Referees, who are both FIFA Accredited and BFA accredited.”

The SCBB clients cut across the bank’s Business Segments  ranging from Global Banking, Commercial Banking and Retail Banking. The winning Letshego team is expected to travel to Liverpool sometime in November for the home match against Fulham.
