As usual the crème de la crème of Botswana’s fashionistas from all walks of life came under one roof to witness the launch of BK Proctor’s new apparel line dubbed Collections by BK in the leafy suburbs of Phakalane recently. The newly launched and creatively inspired brand mainly specializes in sneakers and according to Proctor, the line is largely supported by other merchandises and inspired by the creative consumers who have long supported his music career.
The do attracted the who’s who of Botswana’s fashion industry and various personalities among them Mothusi Lesolle of Izaura, renowned make-up artist,Thomamo Diamond, Loungo Andre Pitse, Ross Phatsimo, Miss Gee Kays, German Dollar, T.H.A.B.O, Gaone Dintwe, Dipsy Selolwane Thobo Kerekang of Keno Suits as well as Botswana Stock Exchange CEO, Thapelo Tsheole and the Ghodratis. Tsheole said it is pleasing to see the youth putting their best foot forward in job and wealth creation.
Tsheole said business propositions such as this one could change the country’s import pattern on textile and apparel products as well as help mitigate the county’s dependence on imports. Supporting his sentiments, Tshelo said currently Botswana imports an estimated P1.7 billion worth of textile and apparel products annually.
“It’s a great achievement to see what BK Proctor has started, it’s a very bold stand he took; as we are now, our country imports P55 billion worth products and around P1.7 billion is textile products. We have great personnel to produce goods that can be bought locally, before even exploring outside. He is in the right direction to become a mogul in what he intends to do especially with the local economy struggling to buy. We need great minds to feed and substitute imports.
This will also create employment. As business people and even the public we should buy. I am aware that from now on you (BK Proctor) will attract unknown friends that will want donations of your merchandise citing that they are marketing you rather than buying even when they can afford to. I therefore advice you to carefully consider these and be remindful that you are running a business entity.”
For his part, the man of the moment, BK Proctor said he was happy that his project has finally seen the light of the day. Proctor explained that the project was inspired by all the creative minds he has met throughout his music career and further wanted to expand their look by adding a sneaker experience to their look.
“For me it’s about contributing to the socio-economic growth through talent. Creativity has brought all of us here to finally having this brand. We specialize in footwear apparel, idea with a purpose and shoes remain our core to serve our customers diverse tastes. We wish for all the necessary support from Batswana and only then can we all grow big in the creative industry,” he concluded.
Meanwhile Mothusi Lesolle of iZaura also congratulated Collections by BK for the stern stand and risk they took to venture into an upcoming Botswana fashion industry.Citing himself as an example, Lesolle said his existence in the fashion industry happened after he quit a plum corporate job to start his line, iZaura.
“I took a risk fresh from the corporate world to join this fashion industry. So to see BK Proctor starting this way could be his biggest break too. Fashion in Botswana has been in the existence without a proper industry. We desperately need to have brand collaborations, influencers to brands and retails agreements to speed up the process of having a full-fledged industry.
We have great minds in fashion and Botswana is not ready, however this is the time to shine and stand together to create a long-lasting legacy. We are too small a population to compete in Botswana. Also copying other people’s brands has delayed the growth of our industry. I therefore urge other aspirants to have this conversation of collaborations because we have the power to diversify the economy.”
