The Masa Square Hotel Fashion Show Challenge got off to a flying start yesterday at Mokolodi Nature Reserve with various judges, mentors and mentees taking part in an inspired Mother Nature challenge as a build up to a bigger show sometime this year. Yesterday’s challenge saw South African-born, Robert Mothapo, 26 of Polokwane Province – a graduate of University of Botswana (UB) with a BA in Economics in 2017 being the first winner of the inaugural 2018 MSH fashion challenge held at Mokolodi Nature Reserve.
All contestants were tasked with going on an inspired game drive which ultimately required everyone to come up with inspired designs and drawings, coordinated by the judges among them Mothusi Lesolle of IZaura clothing line. Mothapo who also owns a design house called Saintlazarus acknowledged his ability to blend with nature for helping his creative flair and executing the fashion brief to the letter.
“Looking at my educational background, people always find it ironic that I have chosen fashion as my career of choice. However, being a fashion enthusiast I started off as a painter which ultimately fuelled my passion is as far as fashion is concerned. I come from a family which is fashion forward hence it was very easy for me to always excel. I have been with my mentor in the Masa Square Hotel fashion show 2018 for over two months now as a newbie and I’m loving every moment of the journey.”
Furthermore, Mothapo added, “I aim to make my brand visible and take it to greater heights courtesy of the 2018 MSH fashion show. I want my brand to become a global brand and collaborate as much as possible with other internationally renowned brands and further grow my abilities. Currently, I am involved with fashion houses such as Evolwears, Nellyhurschhouse and Lavendo clothing and I can only grow bigger and better from here.”
Chief Judge, Lesolle of IZaura fame, alongside personalities from the Limkokwing University Faculty of Fashion encouraged all mentees to put more effort in the upcoming challenges as they all contribute to the final results in the fashion show build ups towards the big show. “As a judge it’s always easy to see loopholes in every design but as a designer it may be a tad difficult. Thus as a designer you should know your strength. I always say that as a protégé designer, surround yourself with the best people that make you stand out. Also take heed that as mentees you will be judged against time. The Fashion industry is all about doing the most within a limited time space. So this very challenge was to highlight these fashion basics to every aspiring designer.”
For her part, Masa Square Hotel Marketing Manager, Neo Nkele applauded all the participants for taking part in the challenge as well as committing to learning new traits in their industry every day from all the engaged fashion heavyweights. “It was a good challenge for all fashion enthusiasts. This is the first challenge of the journey in this year’s fashion campaign. The chosen mentees and mentors were all on 100% attendance so if we can keep it this way surely we are bound to have a successful annual fashion show. Also note, our next workshop is on 23rd August.”
The MSH Fashion Show mentors included Priestly, Dihdah, Bondphil, Delayna Scott, Eccentric Style LOFT, Botocy and Kefseddy; with their proxies being Gomolemo Majafe, Robert Mothapo, Kudzani Mbulawa, Pearl Chombo, Shato Gondo, Lebogang Sebina and Keemenao Kenalemang respectively.
